Saturday morning and the hall is full of tables and the tables are full of things, and fifteen people are working through it and enjoying themselves more than the job strictly requires.
A radio on somewhere, tuned to a station nobody chose. Two children running a route between the tables that has clearly been established over several weeks. A man holding up something absurd and asking the room, seriously, what it is.
And her in the middle of it, because she is always in the middle of it, sorting fast and well.
Three years ago she took the assessment. The following week a woman she likes came and found her and said, with real warmth, we saw your result and we would love you on this.
She said yes, obviously. She was new and she was glad to be asked.
And it has been fine. Better than fine, most weeks. She is good at it and the people are good and this morning is genuinely enjoyable.
But somewhere in the third year she noticed a thing she has not said to anybody.
The word is on her now. Not just in the sense that she does the job. In the sense that when new people arrive, somebody says her name and then says the word, in the same breath, as an explanation. In the sense that when she said something once about maybe doing a different thing, two people said, cheerfully, but you are our whatever it was.
And what settled in her, sorting a table on a Saturday, is that the word got to that church before she did, and that nobody has ever had to find out who she is, because there was already a summary waiting when she arrived.
Not what this page is for
Getting it out of the way first, because you are sorting a table and you are quick.
This is not going to give you a different word to be known by, and it is not going to give you a script for getting off the team, or on to another one, or for saying anything to anybody this morning. There is no exercise coming and there is no list at the end for you to find yourself on.
And nothing here is going to make the woman who asked you a villain. She saw a result, she thought of you warmly, and she asked. That is not a plot. That is a church working the way churches work.
You are not stuck inside a word, and there is no better word out there that would settle what three years have quietly unsettled. That is not me being diplomatic. Scripture is what says it, and the Holy Spirit has never once introduced anybody by their category.
There is a name and it is not sayable
Here is the sentence I want in that hall with you, and it is one of the strangest promises in the whole book.
To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.Revelation 2:17
A new name. Written. Given.
And then the clause that should stop you where you stand: which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.
Nobody else gets to know it. It is not announced. It cannot be read out at a retreat, printed on a sheet, or said in the same breath as your name to a newcomer. It is not available to a room at all, by design.
You have a name from God that no congregation has ever been in a position to hand round, and it was never going to be a thing anybody could explain you with. I am not stretching the verse. Revelation 2:17 puts the not knowing right in the text as part of the gift, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a written line like that and makes it land on a woman sorting a table.
Why a summary feels like a lid
Now the plain thing, and it will name what has been happening.
A description given to a group becomes an efficiency. It is genuinely useful. It is how a busy church tells forty new people who is who without a two hour conversation each.
But a summary that arrives before a person does one more thing, which nobody intends and everybody has done: it decides in advance which parts of that person the room will be looking for.
That is why the word feels like a lid rather than a hat. It is not that people are wrong about you. It is that they were told what to look at before they looked.
You have never been the small thing that got said about you, and no summary arriving ahead of you ever had the authority to close anything. The word gives a name that no man knows, and the Spirit who searches all things is not running on the same summary the room got.
And the white stone is given, not achieved
One more thing about that verse, because you are the kind of person who will hear it as another performance.
The stone is given. So is the name written on it. The overcoming in Revelation 2 is not a career of impressive spiritual output, it is the hanging on of ordinary people in a hard church in a hard city.
Nobody earns the name. Nobody is assessed into it. It is handed over.
You are named already, privately, by somebody who has never once needed you to be summarizable, and that is a gift and not an outcome. The word says will give him, and the Spirit who was given to you was given the same way, and neither of them arrived because you scored well.
And this is not a signal to go and resign anything this morning. Sort the table. Enjoy the radio. If something needs saying to somebody it can be said another day, and this page does not know your situation and will not pretend to.
So come back to the hall, and the tables, and the children running their route, and the radio nobody chose.
The word was never the injury. It was accurate, and it got you asked, and it gave you three mostly good years.
The injury is what it turned into when it arrived ahead of you. It stopped being a description and became an introduction, and an introduction repeated for three years starts doing the work of a name, and you have been quietly wondering whether anybody in that building will ever get past it.
There is a name that got past it before any of them met you.
You are named by God privately, on a stone nobody else can read, and no word said in the same breath as yours has ever reached that. That is Revelation 2:17 in its own deliberate words, and the Holy Spirit is the one who turns a written line into ground a woman can stand on in a hall on a Saturday morning, and God has never introduced anybody with a summary, and He did not learn your name from a form.
That is not something to sort out over another three years. It is something to say out loud in a hall with a table half done, and then to go back to the sorting, standing differently while you do it.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, in the hall, in the parking lot, wherever you are standing when you finish reading. Christ is in you and you are in Him, and that name has been given to you rather than assigned to you, which is exactly why a woman with a word attached to her can speak like this. Scripture is the ground under it, the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely accurate, and how any of it unfolds from here is His to decide. What is being asked of you is one word said out loud and one word set down. That is small enough for this morning, and it stands on the Name and not on how convinced you feel.
- Word that arrived before anybody knew me, you are not my name. Scripture says there is a white stone with a new name written that no man knows except the one who receives it, so the naming of me was never a thing a room could do.
- Lid that three years of introductions put on me, get off my head. The Holy Spirit searches all things and the word gives that name as a gift and not an outcome, and in the name of Jesus I am named already and I am named now.
- Lord, You have a name for me that nobody in this building can read. I thank You, because You never once needed me to be summarizable, and this morning I am sorting this table known.
