Forty minutes into the drive home and the road has gone quiet in the way roads do on a Sunday evening in the fall.
Behind him a good weekend. Genuinely good. He had laughed until his face hurt on Saturday night over something so small he could not repeat it to his wife without ruining it. He had prayed with a man he barely knows and meant every word.
And in his coat pocket, folded twice, is a sheet of paper.
They had done the exercise on Saturday afternoon. Everybody had. Forty questions, a scoring grid on the back, three words at the end in a box. The woman who ran it was lovely about it and said several times that it was only a tool, and she meant that, and everybody laughed and compared and it was a nice hour.
His top result was hospitality.
He drove twelve miles before he let himself think about it properly, and what he thought was this: they have no idea.
Because the truth is he has dreaded people coming to his house since he was twenty-two. Not disliked. Dreaded. There is a reason and it is an old one and it is his and he has never told anybody, including his wife, including the man he prayed with on Saturday. He is warm with people everywhere else on earth. His own front door is the one place it goes out of him.
So he is driving home with a piece of paper in his coat that describes a man he is not, produced by good people who wished him well, and the feeling in the car is not anger and it is not amusement.
It is the flat, quiet, specific loneliness of being described wrong by people who like you.
What is not happening on this page
Straight out, so you can read the rest with the paper still in your pocket.
Nothing here is going to give you a better result. No corrected word, no more accurate three, no improved version of Saturday afternoon done properly this time. I am not going to describe you closely enough that you can take it as a diagnosis, and there is no list at the end for you to find yourself on.
And nothing here is going to be unkind about the woman who ran it. She did a good thing carefully and she said it was only a tool and she was right about that.
You are not waiting on somebody getting the word right, and there is no accurate label out there that would finally settle what that paper failed to settle. That is not me lowering your expectations. Scripture is what says it, and the Holy Spirit has never once needed a man summarized before He would deal with him.
The searching was already finished
Here is the sentence I want in front of you, and it was written a very long time before Saturday.
O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me.Psalm 139:1
Thou hast searched me. Perfect tense. Completed action. Not is searching, not will search when the data is in.
Searched, which is not the same word as glanced at, and not the same word as assessed. Searched is what you do when you intend to find everything, including the thing at twenty-two that a man has never said out loud to his wife.
And then, known me. Not classified me. Not summarized me in three words in a box.
You have been searched and known already, completely, by somebody who was not working from a form. I am not softening that. Psalm 139:1 puts the verb in the completed tense, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a written line like that and makes it land in a man alone in a car forty miles from home.
The verse everybody skips is verse two
Read on, because David gets specific in a way that would be alarming if it were anybody else.
Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.Psalm 139:2
My downsitting and mine uprising. Which is to say the ordinary mechanics of a life, the getting up and the sitting down, the parts nobody sees and nobody would think to ask about on a questionnaire.
Thou understandest my thought afar off. Not knows about. Understands. From a distance, before it arrives, including the thoughts a man has in a car and does not say.
A form can only ever know what you tell it. That is not a flaw in the form. That is what a form is. Forty questions can hold forty answers, and a man is not forty answers, and the woman who ran it would be the first to say so.
You have never been reduced to what you were able to report about yourself, because the knowing that matters was never gathered from your answers. That is Psalm 139:2 in its own words, and the Spirit who inspired it is not somewhere out there waiting for better data on you.
What a result was standing in for
Now here is the thing worth being honest about, because you already half know it.
The disappointment in that car is not really about accuracy. If the paper had said something true you would have been pleased for about ninety seconds and then it would have gone in a drawer with the others.
What you wanted from Saturday was not a word. It was the experience of being seen. And when the word came back wrong, what it exposed was not a scoring error. It was that you have been carrying a question for a long time about whether anybody sees you at all, and you had quietly hoped that an hour with a grid might answer it.
It was never going to. Not because it was a bad tool but because it is a tool, and being seen is not a thing a tool does.
You are seen right now, entirely, including the part of this you have not told anybody, and that is not something you are waiting to earn or to be assessed into. The word says He searched and He knows, and the Spirit who searches all things is not standing outside your front door with the rest of them.
And there is no version of this where the thing at twenty-two is the disqualifier. It has been known the whole time. It was known on Saturday while the papers were being handed out.
So come back to the car, and the road going quiet, and the sheet folded twice in your coat.
The paper was never the injury. It was a well-meant hour with a scoring grid, and it did what a scoring grid can do, and no more.
The injury is a hope you had loaded onto it without telling anybody, including yourself, and its failure to carry that hope felt like a verdict on how findable you are.
You are not hard to find. You were found before the retreat was booked.
You have been searched and known and understood from far off, and nothing on that paper either added to that or took anything from it. That is Psalm 139:1 and Psalm 139:2 saying the same thing twice, and the Holy Spirit is the one who turns a written line into ground a man can stand on in a car on a Sunday night, and God has never needed a form, and He was not waiting for your results to come in.
That is not something to sort out over the next twenty years. It is something to say out loud in a car with the road quiet, and then to go home and be an ordinary man in his own house, driving differently for the last forty minutes.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, in the car, in the driveway, wherever you are sitting when you finish reading. Christ is in you and you are in Him, and that knowing has been given to you rather than earned by you, which is exactly why a man with a wrong result in his pocket can speak like this. Scripture is the ground under it, the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely accurate, and how any of it unfolds from here is His to decide. What is being asked of you is one word said out loud and one sheet of paper put down. That is small enough for tonight, and it stands on the Name and not on how convinced you feel.
- Folded sheet in my coat pocket, you do not know me. Scripture says the Lord has searched me and known me, and that searching was finished before anybody printed a form, so the word on me was never a word a room could hand out.
- Loneliness of being described wrong by people who like me, you are not staying in this car. The Holy Spirit searches all things and the word says He understands my thought afar off, and in the name of Jesus I am known already and I am not waiting to be summarized.
- Lord, You searched me and You know me, including the part I have never said out loud. I thank You, because You never needed a form to tell You what You put in me, and tonight I am driving home known.
