The Right RoomPsalm 139:23

Nine Hundred Good Mornings

This message is for eight years on the welcome desk being the first face everybody sees, warm and quick and genuinely good at it, and a wall she hits about forty minutes in every Sunday that she has never described because it would sound like she does not like people

Forty minutes in and the wall arrives, the way it has arrived every Sunday for about five years.

She is at the desk by the doors, which are propped open because the weather is good, and the light is coming right in across the floor and making everybody look like the best version of themselves.

She is excellent at this. That is not in question and never has been. She remembers names, and she remembers the thing behind the name, which is the actual skill. She asked a man about his mother's surgery this morning and his face did something that made his wife look at her. She spotted a couple hovering by the bulletin board and got to them before they could turn around and go home, which is a thing she has done perhaps two hundred times and which nobody else in that building can do.

Eight years. Call it nine hundred good mornings, most of them real.

And at about forty minutes, without fail, something in her shuts a door and she is running on the outside of herself for the rest of it.

She still says the right things after that. Warmly. She is not phoning it in. But the person doing it from minute forty-one is a different person, running from a smaller tank, and by the time she gets in the car she cannot speak.

Her husband stopped asking about four years ago whether she was all right after church.

And she has never said one word about any of it, to him or to anybody, because there is only one way that sentence comes out and it is: I do not really like people. Which is not true, and would land as though it were, and would undo eight years of something real in about nine seconds.

What is not on this page

Let me say it right away, because you are quick and you are already looking for the turn.

Nothing here is going to suggest you come off the desk, cut back, swap, or say a word to anybody. Not this morning and not by implication at the end. I cannot see your church, your doors, or the couple by the bulletin board who will not come back if nobody catches them, and a page that cannot see those things has no business steering you.

And nothing here is going to tell you what you are instead. There is no list at the bottom and no exercise coming.

You are not being pushed anywhere, and there is nothing about this you have to settle today. That is not me handling you gently. Scripture is what makes room for the honest thing before any decision at all, and the Holy Spirit has never once required a woman to have it worked out before He would meet her.

The prayer that hands the looking over

Here is the sentence I want in front of you, and it is the end of a psalm that everybody quotes the beginning of.

Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts.Psalm 139:23

David has spent twenty-two verses saying that God already knows everything about him, down to the words before they are on his tongue.

And then he asks God to search him.

That is not redundant. It is the whole point. He is not asking God to find out. He is asking God to do the examining instead of him.

Which is exactly what you have not been able to do for five years, because you have been running the examination yourself in the car every Sunday, and the only verdict your own examination has ever been able to produce is the one you are afraid of.

You are allowed to hand the searching over to somebody who is not frightened of what He will find in you. I am not stretching the psalm. Psalm 139:23 is a request made by a man who has just spent the whole poem saying God sees everything already, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a written prayer like that and hands a woman a way out of her own courtroom.

The wall is a fact about a tank, not a fact about your heart

Now the accusation you have been living under, laid out where you can see it.

You have concluded that the wall means something about how much you love people. And you have concluded that quietly, over five years, without ever putting the reasoning in daylight, which is how conclusions like that survive.

Put it in daylight. A woman who did not like people would not remember the surgery. She would not have crossed a room two hundred times to catch someone before they left. She would not have done minute forty-one for five years rather than let anybody down.

The wall is not information about your affection. It is information about a tank, and about what a particular kind of work costs a particular kind of person, and that cost is not a moral quantity.

You have not been faking warmth for eight years, you have been paying a price nobody could see and grading yourself for feeling it. The word never once measures love by how long a person can sustain a room, and the Spirit who searches all things has been at that desk at minute forty-one every Sunday and has never read it the way you have.

What it has actually cost to stay silent

And here is the deeper thing, and it is not about the desk.

For five years there has been a real, weekly, entirely describable fact about your Sunday that has never once been said to God out loud. Not out of rebellion. Because the only sentence available sounded like a confession of something ugly, and nobody hands God a sentence like that voluntarily.

Which means the whole thing has been carried alone rather than handed over, and that arrangement costs a great deal more than the work does.

He has known since the second year.

You are welcome to say the sentence you are ashamed of, and He has never once asked you to pretend that minute forty-one does not happen. The word has David asking to be searched precisely because he is not the one who can be trusted to do it, and the Spirit who was given to help us is not standing at the door waiting for a better version.

The breakthrough

So come back to the desk, and the propped doors, and the light coming across the floor, and a wall arriving at minute forty.

The people were never the injury. You love them and it shows and the couple by the bulletin board came back because of you.

The injury is five years of a private verdict, that the wall means you do not really like anybody, and the verdict has never been examined out loud because you have been the one running the examination and you have been frightened of the result.

You can hand the examining over today. That is not a decision, a resignation, or a conversation with anybody.

You are free to say the true thing out loud and let Him do the looking, and nothing about that accuses you or undoes one of those nine hundred mornings. That is Psalm 139:23 asked by a man who already knew he was fully known, and the Holy Spirit is the one who turns a written prayer into ground a woman can stand on at a welcome desk, and God has never asked anybody to pretend, and He was not fooled by five years of minute forty-one.

That is not a decision and it does not begin one. It is one sentence, said once, today.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, at the desk, in the car, wherever you are sitting when you finish reading. Christ is in you and you are in Him, and that standing has been given to you rather than earned across nine hundred mornings, which is exactly why a woman who hits a wall at forty minutes can talk like this. Scripture is the ground under it, the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely accurate, and how any of it unfolds from here is His to decide. What is being asked of you is one sentence said out loud and nothing said to anybody else today. That is small enough for this morning, and it stands on the Name and not on how convinced you feel.

  1. Wall I hit at forty minutes, you are not evidence that I do not like people. Scripture says search me, O God, and know my heart, and that is an invitation a person can only make when she is not the one doing the searching.
  2. Verdict I have been passing on myself in the car for five years, get out of this vehicle. The Holy Spirit searches all things and the word never once measured love by how long a person can hold a room, and in the name of Jesus I am handing the examining over today.
  3. Lord, You know where I actually fit and You have never asked me to pretend this is it. I thank You, because You have been at that desk at minute forty-one for five years, and today I am saying it to You and leaving it with You.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
