I Want The Whole Map First

There are three documents on her laptop and every one of them is good.

The first one is eleven pages and has been eleven pages for about two years. It is thorough. Somebody who knew what they were doing could take that document and run the thing tomorrow.

The second one is shorter and better and is from last spring, and it has a section at the end called open questions, and there are nine of them.

The third one is four lines and is the one she actually thinks about, and it has been four lines for eight months.

She is thirty-four. She is not a procrastinator in any ordinary sense and it would be lazy to call her one. She works hard, she finishes things at work, she is the one people rely on.

It is specifically beginnings that she cannot do, and specifically because of the same thing every time, which is that she cannot start something without knowing where it ends.

Not out of anxiety, exactly. It feels to her like responsibility. Starting a thing you cannot see the end of means asking people to join something you cannot describe, and committing resources to an outcome you cannot promise, and she has watched people do that badly and she is not going to be that.

So she plans. She plans well. And five years in she has begun to notice something she does not like, which is that no amount of planning has ever produced the thing she is actually waiting for, which is the end of the map.

What is not going to happen here

Let me say it before anything else, because you will want to know the structure of this.

Nothing here is going to tell you what you are for. There is no list at the bottom and no exercise and no description of you close enough to take as a diagnosis.

And nothing here is going to tell you that five years of planning was disobedience. It was not. You have been trying to be responsible with other people, and that instinct is right, and it is not going to be mocked here.

And nothing here is going to hand you a plan, a direction, or anything that extends past this week. Which, I recognize, is going to be the most uncomfortable sentence on the page for you.

You are not being scolded and you are not being handed anything to plan. That is not caution on my part. Scripture handles this in one sentence about the size of a day, and the Holy Spirit has never once needed a woman to see an ending before He would move her.

Sufficient is a word about supply

Here is the sentence, and the last word is the one that matters.

Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.Matthew 6:34

Sufficient unto the day.

That is usually read as a warning, as though it meant each day has enough trouble in it already, which it does. But look at what the sentence structurally assumes: that a day is a complete unit. It has its own trouble and, by implication in the whole passage, its own supply.

The passage before it is about birds and lilies and God feeding and clothing. The whole argument is about provision arriving at the size of a day.

Which means the ending you are waiting for is not withheld. It is simply not the unit that provision comes in.

You have been waiting for the whole thing to be supplied at once, and Scripture describes provision arriving in day-sized portions on purpose. I am not stretching that. Matthew 6:34 treats the day as the complete unit and the surrounding passage is entirely about provision, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a written line like that and lands it on a woman with three documents open and none of them started.

The manna was the same shape

And there is an older version of the same thing, which you will appreciate because it is concrete.

The manna in the wilderness came daily. That was not an inconvenience of the delivery system. It was the design, stated explicitly: they were to gather a certain rate every day, that God might prove them.

And when they tried to store it, which is the entirely reasonable thing a planner does, it bred worms.

Nobody in that story is criticized for wanting more than a day's worth. It is simply that the thing did not work that way, and it did not work that way on purpose.

You have been trying to gather an ending in advance and Scripture shows that a supply given by the day cannot be stored ahead. That is Exodus 16 in its own account, and the Spirit who searches all things has been with you through five years of documents and has not been withholding an ending as a test.

And what is actually being asked

Now let me be exact, because you will want the parameters.

You are not being asked to start any of the three things. Not the eleven pages, not the one with nine open questions, and not the four lines.

You are not being asked to commit anything, tell anybody, or accept any obligation past Friday.

One thing that is in front of you this week. Already there. Ordinary. Requiring no plan, no commitment, and no answer to any of the nine open questions.

Not because starting small reveals the map. I am not making that promise and nobody should.

Because a day is the unit and a week is a small collection of days, and that is the size of thing anybody is ever handed.

You are able to do one ordinary thing this week without an ending and without deciding anything at all about the three documents. Scripture never once requires a person to see the outcome before they may do the next thing, and the Spirit who was given to guide is not standing at the end of a map you have not been given.
